How to Sell MORE Books: PR Strategies and Secrets from the Pros

The key to selling more books is building awareness among your potential readers and book buyers. For our March program, two publicity experts will share their strategies, secrets and techniques for standing out in today’s marketplace and developing a following. This will include finding your niche market; lead time and setting up your timeline; creating the modern media kit; how NOT to write a press release; figuring out what the media wants and how to exploit it; where to spend, where to save; identifying key reviewers and bloggers; giveaways and freebies; working with local bookstores; how to hire and work with a publicist, and more!

DARLENE CHAN served as Creative Executive for Paramount Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. She helped to develop Beverly Hills Cop, King David, D.A.R.Y.L. and Explorers. She also served as Executive Director of Production for the Walt Disney Motion Picture Group. Darlene was point person on numerous talent deals, which included producers, writers and directors. Darlene then moved to independent production and joined Davis Entertainment as Vice President of Production. She produced Grumpy Old Men, The Thing Called Love, and others. 

In January 2009, Darlene began her own company specializing in PR and social media for authors. From 2010-2014, she co-founded and ran iximingRED, a website customization and installation service that worked with authors to present their books and brand on the Internet. KATE SEXTON KAISER began her 40 year career as a music journalist. From rock and roll in the '60s and '70s to the digital/Internet revolution of the late '80s and '90s, she has been a marketing professional for Fortune 100 companies, small startups, and nonprofits. She opened Kathleen Kaiser & Associates in 1993, which now focuses on working with the literary and arts communities. With four published books and three plays under her belt, Kate understands how authors are often confused by the new world of promoting their books and themselves. She aids authors to navigate building an audience and selling books.

Kate is the executive director of the Pacific Institute for Professional Writing (PIPW), president of the Small Publishers, Artists & Writers Network (SPAWN), and producer of the 805 Writers' Conferences. MODERATOR:  ROBIN QUINN has been in the book business for two and a half decades. She is an award-winning book editor, ghostwriter, copywriter and book coach. Robin specializes in self-help, health, spirituality, business and the media, and also works with uplifting fiction and memoir. Her editing credits include the newly released codependency book by musician Juliet Wright, Everything Is For My Recovery; the self-help title, From Misery to Happiness, by long-time therapist and life coach, Carolyn Berry; and the college memoir, Heaven + Hell = Harvard, by Jason W. Park. Robin began her media career in production in radio and television news, and today writes media releases and one-sheets. She understands book promotion from both sides of the news desk.
